Abstract

Let me remind you that the political party that led us to the exercise of government in the period 66-70 was a coalition of the Republican parties and national union.
It is anecdotal to say that, as I saw that the word coalition could popularly be confused with collision, I proposed, and so it was accepted, that the party be called National Unification. It was indeed the union of two parties that had been staunch enemies 18 years ago and which the hatreds aroused in the wake of the 1948 civil war were still in force in the sentiments of many of the media leaders of both parties. It is fair to say that this union was made possible by the enlightenment and patriotism of Dr. Calderón Guardia and Don Otilio Ulate, who postponed partisan interests in the national interest, since the alternative since then was seen to be the enthronement of only one party with the potential to reach the Government of the Republic. It is also worth the opportunity to say that, in my very personal opinion, if the National Unification then had a decline until its subsequent disappearance, this was due to the lack of perception that the ideas presented and what was acted on in the years 1965 to 1970, responded to the Costa Rican being and the virtues of our people.
