Treatment of symptomatic vaginal discharge due to mixed infections Pharmacological options available in Costa Rica (Topic review)

Abstract

In the following review, we identified the different therapeutic options that are available in the Costa Rican pharmaceutical market for the pharmacological management of symptomatic vaginal infections, and if they coincide with the clinical evidence and the international recommendations of organisms with health interest such as Pan American Health Organization. Symptomatic vaginal discharge is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in General Medicine and Gynecology. In Latin America there is little information on the prevalence of genital tract infections. The available evidence confirms that about 90% of the vaginal secretions are of infectious etiology, the most frequent being of the bacterial type by Gardnerella vaginalis, followed by mycotic infections by Candida albicans and by protozoan of the type Trichomonas vaginalis, or mixed infections. In view of the variety of possible etiological infectious agents and based on the available clinical evidence, is recommends syndromic management for the treatment of symptomatic vaginal infections.
