Diagnostic reference levels implementation for tomography studies according to ICRP 135
Main Article Content
Abstract
Medical exposure to ionizing radiation is the primary source of exposure to artificial ionizing radiation globally. To reduce these unnecessarily high doses to patients, the International Commission on Radiological Protection [ICRP] recommends the use of Diagnostic Reference Levels, or DRLs. DRLs are an effective tool in optimizing radiological protection in medical patient exposure. The objective of this review is to analyze the database of CT radiological diagnostic cases from the Centro Médico de Radioterapia Siglo XXI between August 2019 and March 2021 and to establish a process for healthcare professionals and those in related fields to review, establish and implement the DRLs in their centers, using the ICRP 135 as a guideline. This dataset covered a total of 22 irradiated body areas for a total of 147 studies in adult patients. According to the ICRP 135, a minimum of 30 studies are required to validate the information, so in this case, both prostate and breast studies were considered. The median CTDIvol (mGy) values were 13 for breast and 16 for prostate. The median values using DLP’s (mGy*cm) were 609 for breast and 927 for prostate.
