Abstract

The novel The Problem, by the Guatemalan writer Máximo Soto-Hall, was first published in 1899. Since then its location has become - true to its title - problematic. In principle, the text did not appear in Guatemala but in San José, Costa Rica, where the author resided for several years. Chronologically, it is the first novel written in that country, with a Costa Rican setting and characters, but, given the author's foreigners, local literary history has never considered it as the starting point of the national narrative. This place is granted, not without some reluctance, to El moto, a short novel by Joaquín García Monge, published the year after the appearance of El problema, in 1990.
