Abstract

The church of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios was the third parish in the city of Santiago de Guatemala. It was presided over by a diocesan priest, which also had the title of rector.1 According to Cortés and Larraz (1958t1:26-27) the parish had the annex towns of Santa Ana, Santa Isabel, San Cristóbal El Bajo, San Gaspar Vivar, San Pedro Tesorero (Las Huertas), San Lucas Cabrera, San Bartolomé Becerra and San Andrés Deán, as well as the church of santa Cruz that was within the city.

With the earthquakes of 1773, the temple was damaged. The priest Joaquín Alvarez described some of the damage to Archbishop Cayetano Francos and Monroy on his pastoral visit of 1780. The temple had its main chapel with its cimborio, which was completely destroyed with the earthquakes of 1773. The main altarpiece was under the toral arch in which was placed the image of Our Lady of The Remedies (AHA, pastoral visit of Francos 1780, volume 27, fols. 103-120).

Despite the transfer of the city in 1774, the parishes of the city of Santiago de Guatemala remained in the old settlement. In 1780 the parishes of El Sagrario, San Sebastián, Jocotenango, were moved, but Los Remedios as well as La Candelaria remained in La Antigua Guatemala until 1784.
