Abstract

The ivory trade ban, enacted by the Convention on International Trade in Threatened Species in October 1989, has turned out to be a death sentence for African elephants. Supporters of the ban during the convention, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, claimed that it would wipe out the ivory market by putting poachers out of business, and save elephants by taking away their economic value. Those who opposed the act pointed out that they would only create the black market, and that the hunters would look for other ways to get what they wanted.
