Clinical case: myopathy associated with the use of statins

Abstract

It is present the case of a 60 years old woman, carrier of the Charcot Marie Tooth disease, hypertensive, dislipidemia and hypothyroidism, a lipid profile is perform as part of her medical control, and her doctor decides to prescribe her lovastatin 40 mg each night for a hypercholesterolemia, later, the patient presented an increase of the muscular weakness and a rise of the creatinine phosphokinase in a blood test, her doctor decides to suspend the therapy. Six month later the patient persist with the elevated CPK, an inflamatory miositis was suspected, an electromyography, a nerve conduction velocity test and all the immunology test was perform, all negative, it was decide to take a muscular biopsy which report a single cell infiltration of the endomisium, compatible with inflammatory myopathy for statin use, the therapy was suspended and other medications were used to avoid new episodes.
