History: freedom and faith

Abstract
European economic integration, the theoretical decline of Marxism, the end of communism and the rise of liberal thought and practice are facts that stimulate profound social change. What happened? and, above all, why did it happen? Is spontaneous creation of individual wills articulated in proportion to their strength and ability or providential design of any immanent or divine mystery? Are we in the presence of an "invisible hand", an ineluctable need, a plan drawn from eternity or clearly discernible and verifiable free wills? On the occasion of this matter I intend to address three themes: (1) the scientific basis of social disciplines in general and historical knowledge in particular, (2) existentialist thesis on the essence of history and, 3) the Augustinian conception of history and the possibility of it being complemented by existential posture.
